Well, If Scarlett's Doing It...

If you haven't read my monthly column in RealMoms, then I'm about to spoil the surprise. Moroccanoil, a product that yours truly now uses daily and can't do without, is currently the hottest thing at hair salons. When I visited mine a couple months back, both the stylists, colorist AND clients were raving about it and telling me I MUST buy it. I thought it was a little strong of a push and wondered what could be in this miracle oil that made each and every one of them gush over it.

Giving into peer pressure (with a slight curiosity I'll admit to), I tried it, loved it and can't be without it. And apparently, Scarlett Johansson is a fan too. Her curly hair was oiled up (I use that term loosely, it doesn't take much), curled up and pinned up for her Iron Man 2 international premiere (which complemented her Armani Privé dress to a "t" might I add).

Do you have a product you've been talked into and can't live without? I'm curious...drop me a line: lauren@dallaschild.com

Cheers,

L

Celebs' Birth Stories Revealed

You may have heard of (or read) the book Your Best Birth, written by moms Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein. The former talk-show host and film director teamed up to talk about natural births and their own personal birth stories. Their book was a spin-off of the duo's documentary entitled "The Business of Being Born."

Now, Lake and Epstein are taking their mission to motivate moms' reevaluation of birth to the next level with MyBestBirth.com. It's here that viewers can watch mini interviews with celebrity moms (like Cindy Crawford and Melissa Joan Hart) who discuss their natural and home birth stories.

Their messages are fascinating — yet their ideas can be a hot-spot for debate amongst moms. Whether you agree with their opinions or not, it's interesting to hear the reasoning behind these celebrity mommies' decisions regarding the birth of their babies. Check out the videos!

The Green Issue: Are there life-altering toxins looming in your home?

Lisa's April feature story, Toxic Tots: Altered Lives, recounts the Sethi family's painful journey to discovering the cause of 5-year-old Tej's near-death health problems. This article is a must-read! And if you're left scratching your head (while suspiciously eying the nooks and crannies of your own home), be sure to click on the links to national and local resources listed alongside the article.

You can also read tips for cleaning your home with eco-friendly homemade products in DallasChild's April Green Issue — who would think that vinegar and a box of Arm & Hammer could accomplish so much (and pose so little harm)?

Or if you’re looking for green-minded reading material to sit down with after your kiddo’s bed time (besides our award-winning magazine, that is!) check out this book: Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home. Not only does the book (by Christopher Gavigan, CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World) detail ways for parents to toxin-proof their child's world, it offers up advice from celebrity parents, such as Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brooke Shields, Courtney Cox, Kate Hudson and more. (Did you know that Gwyneth often makes homemade baby food for little Moses? Or that Courtney readily gave up toxic cleaning products, yet she simply can't stop using Windex? Read all about the "green" give and takes that these Hollywood parents make in their own lives.)

Let us know what you find to be the easiest (or most difficult) "greenifying" actions to implement in your home!

Film Explores American Birth Culture

Birth is a miracle, a rite of passage and a natural part of life. But — according to former talk-show host Ricki Lake and filmmaker Abby Epstein’s film The Business of Being Born — birth is also big business in the U.S.

Lake was compelled to explore this subject after the delivery of her first child and recruited (fellow mom) Epstein to help her document and question the way American women have babies.

Epstein interviews several pregnant New York City women, some of whom are clients of Cara Muhlhahn, a midwife who, in-between filmed birth events, shares her own memories and experience with the filmmakers.

Footage of women having babies punctuates this film — as does interviews with a number of obstetricians, experts and advocates about the history, culture and economics of childbirth.

The film’s fundamental question: Should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potential medical emergency?

This film presents some surprising answers that certainly make great topics of discussion amongst mothers, and is a must-see movie for anyone thinking of having a baby.

Netflix will release the DVD of The Business of Being Born (which was shown only at select theaters) on Feb 26 for rental and online viewing, including bonus material and follow up interviews with the filmmakers and their subjects. The DVD also will be available for purchase on the film’s Web site.

Dallas and Collin County residents may attend a sneak preview of the film at the Feb 23 opening of the Peppermint retail store in Richardson. The special screening will start at 11:30am and costs $5 (or free with a baby goods donation).

If you attend (or have already seen the film), tell us what you think! E-mail your thoughts to us at editorial@dallaschild.com.

Not Just Any Manic Monday...

It's Monday...and that means...It's Dancing With the Stars night, and also the night where your attention and fingers count the most. By now, I'm sure no one needs a reminder, but I'll say it anyway...vote for Dallas' Mark Cuban at 1-800-VOTE-411 or 3411 by text for AT&T Customers as many times as possible. He needs Dallas' (and Fort Worth's) votes!

Now what can be more entertaining than Mark in round 5...vote tonight!

08 October 2007

Dance Dance Mark Cuban

Don’t forget to vote for Mark and Kym as they tackle the jive on tonight’s Dancing with the Stars. On his blog, Cuban expresses concern that we Dallasites will forget about him tonight, while the Cowboys are battling the Bills on Monday Night Football. So, call 1 800/VOTE-411 to help them stay in the game; or, AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 3411---as many as 11 times.

No excuses for stopping at seven votes, either.

Time goes by so slowly ...

Time is a recurring theme throughout our October issue. To give you some perspective on how precious it is, you’ll want to read our very special story written by a local mother/daughter about their journey with childhood cancer. Jennifer Hardy was only 2 when she was diagnosed with Wilms’ Tumor; through treatments and time, the tumor disappeared (she’s now 24), but she and her mother still carry the battle wounds on their hearts.

The family who sweats together stays together! Competitive sports are great, but check out our ideas for engaging your kids in fitness activities that they can enjoy (and crave) long after their glory days fade.

Also in this issue, Lauren Niebes sits down for a rare interview with Tiffany Cuban, the wife of Dallas Mavericks owner and mega-entrepreneur Mark Cuban. And of course, it’s the month of all things orange and chocolate! We’ve culled all the best harvest events and (non-scary) Halloween activities in town.

Read it all in our October issue, on the newstands now.

Dancing With...DallasChild?

I have to say that I’m very excited about the debut of one of the top shows in America tonight…Dancing With the Stars!! This season, Mark Cuban, Dallas’ sole representation this time around, has big shoes to fill since Emmitt won over America (as a dancer), winning the Championship with partner, Cheryl Burk. Beloved and embraced in Dallas for elevating our Mavs from worst to best, the dynamic Cuban is up for the job…so says his wife, Tiffany, when I chatted with her about motherhood, the public eye and of course, Mark on Dancing With the Stars. See what else she has to say about being a mommy of two, philanthropist, and wife to such a high-profile “maverick,” and why he decided to Dance in front of America in October’s issue of DallasChild and FortWorthChild magazines (out on streets today).

Don’t forget to watch our Dallas “maverick” tear up the dancefloor tonight on ABC at 7pm!

Cheers –
Lauren

C-3PO Live!

Hi, I’m Jessica, one of the editorial interns at DallasChild this summer. I went on my first assignment “in the field” this morning to preview the Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination exhibit. I got a sneak peek at all of the cool costumes and models used in the movies. The kids there enjoyed playing at the interactive stations where they could build robots. One of the kids even brought his lightsaber!

While previewing the new exhibit, I had a quick chat with C-3PO, British actor Anthony Daniels.

DallasChild: What does Star Wars mean to a new generation of kids?
Anthony Daniels: I think any generation adopts its own icons. Star Wars is an icon that has passed very smoothly and affectionately through the generations. … Each generation has passed it on, and really I think there are three generations that can enjoy this now.
DallasChild: Why has Star Wars stayed so popular throughout the years?
AD: I don’t think even George Lucas knows why it became so popular. … It had all the ingredients of a classic quest. ... We all know that children love familiarity of a story, and so people have watched Star Wars again and again.

A Rasberry Worth Reading About

I just spent the afternoon chatting with a woman who gets paid to chat for a living … except this time she was on the receiving end of the interview. I met with Kellie Rasberry, the sassy, sarcastic, South Carolina native who wakes up the metroplex each day as co-host of the radio show Kidd Kraddick in the Morning.

Along with an entorage of players (our art director, a photographer, the photog’s assistant and Kellie’s nanny) prepping for a photo shoot, I sat down with the new mom (her daughter Emma Kelly is 4 months old) to discuss the highs (and lows) of single parenthood for the April edition of the Mom Next Door. Disarmingly honest, Kellie dished on everything from her battle with infertility to her infamous divorce to what it’s truly like to be a mom whose life is shared on-air (and online) with millions of fans.

This is a mommy profile you won’t want to miss.

-Tessa

p.s. Just before Emma Kelly gave in to the demands of heavy eyelids and a late afternoon nap, she graciously allowed Mom and me to get one quick group shot; pictured above.

Some Call Her Mayor, Three Call Her Mom

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dallas city Mayor Laura Miller and let me just say, it was a wonderful experience. Aside from leading one of the largest metropolitan cities in the country, this former journalist-turned-politician is the devoted mom to three young children ages 11 to 16. During the course of our 45-minute conversation in a large conference room on the fifth floor of City Hall, Mayor Miller shared with me some truly interesting tidbits:
  • she once kicked a school board leader out of his office during an interview (this was in her journalism days) so she could “pump” (she breastfed each of her three children for a year)
  • she arranges her schedule so she can have dinner with her busy family every night (very few exceptions to this rule are tolerated)
  • her children recently asked her if she would consider having another baby (aww!)

Want to know more? Look for the December issue of DallasChild, where I profile this fascinating mom and reveal the one local hot spot the Mayor absolutely can’t live without, plus the REAL reason she’s not running for re-election.

much love~

Hobnobbin’ with Pat & Vanna

While our story on the parenting perspectives, secret tidbits and notable quotables of Pat Sajak and Vanna White (they were in town this past weekend filming three weeks worth of shows) won’t be ready for you to read until you pick up our October issue, I thought I’d share the behind-the-scenes, all-access pass to the “Wheel” story that’ll never see print.

Yesterday our art director Laura (aka, the “New Vanna” — more on that in a bit) and I arrived at NOKIA theater ready to hobnob, chit chat and rub elbows with the reigning King and Queen of game-show society. After checking in and encircling our necks with our official “Wheel of Fortune” press passes, we were escorted upstairs — by security (you’d think we were there to meet the president) — to the press club (a smallish room dotted with a handful of round tables, a feast of goodies ready for the noshing and a slew of publicity people milling about). Since this was day three of a three-day shoot, the other media outlets were slim, which suited me just fine — it meant I wouldn’t have to battle it out with other reporters to get Team P/V to answer my Q’s.

Hoping to stave off a tension headache I’d felt forming since crawling out of bed, I started downing Diet Pepsi like a champ, meaning 10 minutes later I needed to visit the little girl’s room. When I asked where the nearest facilities were, I was shocked (to say the least) when I discovered I wouldn’t be “going” alone.

“Oh, I’ll escort you,” I was told by some official-looking, headset-wearing woman. “Huh? Seriously?,” I asked.

“Yes ma’am, all members of the press have to be escorted throughout the building — at all times — even to the bathroom,” headset said.

“Wow. Haven’t had a bathroom buddy since kindergarten, but OK,” I said trying to break the tension I had about being “taken potty” by some random stranger.

Headset wasn’t impressed. “I’ll wait outside the door for you and will walk you back when you’re finished.”

Thank goodness she didn’t have to actually hear me flush, too — I probably would’ve suffered from shy bladder syndrome.

After being escorted back to my seat, Laura and I had about an hour to hang out before Pat and Van were ready to talk. During the downtime another headset, a male one this time, walked by and looked at Laura, “Wow, are you auditioning to be the new Vanna?,” he asked her. “Huh? Um, huh?” she stammered. We were both caught off guard and at a total loss for words … but we’re pretty sure he was paying her a great compliment because later not only did a photog from the Dallas Morning News ask me if Laura was our stylist because she looked so great, but even Vanna White herself told Laura during the interview that she loved her hair!!! (note to all: if Laura is ever the next tile turner on Wheel, you can say you heard it hear first, lol!)

When it was time to chat with Pat, I was surprised at his entrance. He just kind of walked on in and sat down beside me. No big “Ta Dah!” No nervous headsets buzzing about giving us a countdown or telling us to keep our distance (we can’t potty or walk by ourselves, but we can chit chat with the talent with no handholding — cool.)

This was the same when Vanna came in, too (she showed up in lounge-about clothes, while Pat was already suited up for the show). I’m not sure what I was expecting, having grown-up watching these two on TV (something I always shared with my grandparents) I guess I expected them to be larger than life — but they weren’t. They were just cool, down-to-earth real people, real parents. Each of them was equally engaging — quick with great, witty responses when needed and honest and forthcoming when the rare, more serious question called for it.

They were fun and it made for a great interview, a great experience. When the headsets did start buzzing about, telling us it was time to wrap up, both Pat and Vanna took a moment to take pics and scribble their monikers on a souvenir shirt for Laura’s 10-year-old daughter, Sabrina, who is a devoted Wheel watcher.

After they left, we were ushered into the theater (which was teaming with some 20,000 screaming North Texans!) for the first taping of Family Week (will air Nov. 13). We were told when to clap, when to “ooh,” when to “ahh,” when to scream, when to be silent. Laura and I just kind of sat back, took it all in and watched as the “regular” Pat and Van again looked larger than life.

Then headset escorted us to the exit. What a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

much love~

Are You a Wheel Watcher?

The DallasChild/FortWorthChild offices are a hotbed for celebrity interviews right now! Shelley’s got Brett Paesel (see her blog entry “Scored an interview with…” for the scoop), our editorial intern, Megan Weadock, just chatted with Andie MacDowell about what it’s like being a mom AND a feathered friend in the new kid flick Barnyard (grab the August issue on stands now to read all about it) and I’ll be meeting up with everyone’s favorite gameshow mega-couple Pat Sajak and Vanna White when Wheel of Fortune rolls into town next weekend.

The Wheel will be taking over NOKIA Theatre in Grand Prairie to film three weeks worth of themed shows in three days, including Best Friends Week, North Texas Week and Family Week. And in between takes, I’m hoping to get Pat and Vanna to spill the beans on their personal parenting philosophies (they each have two kiddos), what it’s like working on the No. 1 program in the history of syndicated television and how they each successfully blend the aspects of both.

Plus, if I play my cards, um, spin the wheel just right maybe I can get Vanna to dish on her secrets to staying thin and entice Pat to share his staying-young/looking-young tricks of the trade (his 60th B-Day is coming up in 2 months!!).

I’ll be heading to the Wheel with our art director, Laura, next Sunday, so if you’d like to see any particular questions posed or want to send a few birthday greetings, just shoot me an email!

much love~
tessa

P.S. If you’d like info on attending one of next week’s tapings, contact CBS 11. Oh, and be sure to check out what Pat and Vanna had to say in our November issue!

Scored an interview with …

Brett Paesel!

The LA mom, wife, actress and writer is the author of Mommies Who Drink. Basically, I could have knocked out this book in an evening after putting the kids to bed, but I’m savoring every chapter because I don’t want it to end (and I’m one of the lucky ones – her book is just now hitting the shelves). I’ll be honest … the title intrigued me, but I didn’t expect much. Then I started reading it and it’s sort of like the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” for motherhood (in fact, Brett appeared on the show and little does she know that I am going to sneak in a question about what it was like working with Larry David – BIG FAN). Anyway, yes, Brett talks about drinking – she lives for her weekly girls-only happy hour. But, more importantly, she takes the reader on a refreshing, witty, autobiographical (and often R-rated) odyssey of what it’s like to be a woman living in a mother’s body.

Please send me an email if you have any questions you want me to ask Brett. Look for the interview to appear in the October issue. --shelley
